Born from Brighton Clay

Most people think pottery is about perfection. We think it's about fingerprints.

Every wobble, every thumbprint, every slightly-off-centre rim tells the story of human hands creating something that matters. Not just another mass-produced plate that looks like everyone else's.

Mudstone Ceramics started in a draughty Brighton garage in 2018 when founder Sarah Chen quit her marketing job. She realised she was happier covered in slip than she'd ever been in a boardroom. That garage became a studio. That studio became a community.

Now we're the place where Brighton's creatives and curious souls come to remember what it feels like to make something with their own hands.

"I thought I'd be terrible. But there's something about centering clay on the wheel—it demands your full attention. The dinner plates I made aren't perfect, but every time I use them, I remember I made something beautiful."
James & Elena Weekend Workshop Students
"Mudstone Ceramics created custom espresso cups for our client conference. Our clients actually photographed them and tagged us. One CEO emailed to ask where we sourced them. That's never happened with tote bags."

Questions Worth Asking

The honest answers about clay, creativity, and what happens when you get your hands dirty

Before You Book Workshop Experience Tableware & Shop Corporate Sessions The Technical Bits

Absolutely not. Our weekend workshops welcome complete beginners—people who've never touched clay and aren't entirely sure which end of a pottery wheel spins. We start with the fundamentals, guide you through hand-building or wheel techniques, and celebrate every wonky bowl like it's a masterpiece. Because at the start, it genuinely is.

Clay doesn't discriminate—it'll get everywhere. Wear clothes you don't mind decorating with terracotta splashes. We provide aprons, but sleeves have a habit of dragging through slip when you're concentrating. Tie back long hair, remove rings that you're emotionally attached to, and embrace the mess. It's half the fun.

Patience, dear potter. Your creation needs to dry slowly, get its first firing (bisque), receive glaze if you've chosen it, then survive a second firing. The full process takes about four weeks. We'll text you when your piece is ready for collection at our Brighton studio, or we can post it to you for a small fee.

Of course. Our online shop showcases handmade plates, bowls, mugs, and serving pieces—all wheel-thrown or hand-built right here at Mudstone Ceramics. Each piece has its own character (we're allergic to uniformity), and everything's dishwasher safe despite looking far too beautiful for such treatment. We ship across the UK.

We transform team building from cringe to creative. Your group learns hand-building techniques together, creates individual pieces, and discovers that collaboration doesn't require PowerPoint. Sessions run two to three hours at our studio or your Brighton venue. There's laughter, clay-covered hands, and surprisingly honest conversations. No trust falls. Ever.
